Holger Ziegeler

This is the blog of Holger Ziegeler, who held the position of Consul General at the German Consulate General in Karachi from 2020 to 2022. This blog will explore various aspects of Holger’s diplomatic work as well as a range of topics covering his other interests, such as classical music and classic cars.

Work, Issues, & Values

Holger’s work on behalf of the Consulate included a visit to flood-hit areas in Pakistan in September 2022 to distribute food relief items to victims of the disaster. In collaboration with the Balochistan Rural Support Programme (BRSP), the German Consulate General signed off on the project to provide food aid for 1,000 affected families in the Lasbela District.

In 2021, Holger was a member of a diplomatic delegation that visited the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI). The delegation was made up of 19 individuals and headed up by the German Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce (AHK) CEO Oliver Oehms. It held business-to-business meetings and assessed overall business and investment opportunities in the region. The group’s presence marked the first physical visit of a German delegation to Pakistan during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also in 2021, Holger hosted an event celebrating 60 years of partnership between MALC (an organization committed to eliminating leprosy and controlling TB in affected areas of Pakistan through comprehensive care) with DAHW, Germany. After delivering the welcome address, Holger highlighted MALC’s contribution to saving lives that could otherwise have been lost to leprosy, TB and other diseases.

Around 60 guests attended the event, including members of MALC’s governing board, local corporate partners, distinguished visitors from Pakistan and Germany, and staff and friends of the organization.

About Holger

Holger has a keen interest in classical music, which he enjoys both listening to and playing. To this end, in March 2022 he delivered the opening address for a performance of the Arcis Saxophone Quartet given at the Arts Council in Karachi. The Munich-based quartet is made up of Claus Hierluksch, Ricarda Fuss, Edoardo Zotti and Jure Knez, and the musicians began their performance with renditions of the German and Pakistani national anthems.

Classic cars hold especial interest for Holger, and he is particularly a fan of the 1970 Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3. This vehicle was a full-sized luxury performance car built by Mercedes-Benz between 1968 and 1972 that featured the company’s powerful 6.3-liter M100 V8 engine. Upon its release, it was one of the fastest four-door cars in the world. Only around 6,500 of these vehicles were produced, making them extremely collectible today.
